PostPosted by OldBoy2k » Tue Oct 13, 2009 11:40 pm

Its pure curiosity but who of our members and readers out there in cyberspace is still running Win2k? Of course dual, trial, quadral, multi system setups are counting too

!!!Win2k still rockz in 2oo9!!!

OldBoy2k's - Win2k song

Win2k was my first love
and it will be my last.
Win2k for the future
it stood by me in the past.

To live without Win2k
would be impossible for me.
In this world of Vista toubles,
my Win2k pushes me through.

Only run it for compatibility testing purposes, haven't used Windows 2000 Pro on a desktop/laptop for many years.

Still have some Windows 2000 servers at work we are working on moving to 2008....should be done by next year.

Still usgin Windows 2000 every day (and who knows where I quit).

Trial booting MSDOS622 and XP for games and/or applications I can't or I don't trash Windows 2000 with and/or doesn't run on the emulated Win98SE.

Still using Win2K as my main and only OS. I think I will switch to windows 7 in a year or so, when it will be properly tuned and patched.
Retrospectively it was a good decision to skip XP and Vista, huge saving and it wasn't at all a handicap for games thanks to this forum.

Still using windows 2000.
Current games in use on it: Paraworld and Age of Mythology. Both work fine without patching, also because they don't use directplay. Your site helped me get Sins of a Solar Empire and Rise of Legends running.

Running it on our server and 15 workstations, including 2 laptops. Also run specialized bankruptcy software (we're a law shop), Tabs3 accounting and calendaring system, and Corel WPX3 suite. We all frankly prefer 2K to anything else. I've set up several XP machines and some in Vista and see no reason to upgrade our workstations. They just work--all the time. Running new hardware--Athlon64's--on all but the Intel laptops. I know it's only a 32-bit system but it's just so stable.

I've giving up and coming back to Windows 2000 since it's release. It's much more reponsive in games. I can never get the mouse feeling right with XP and Vista is even worse but after 2k is tweaked it feels perfect. For first-person shooters it's great. It amazes me how many people ruin the performance of their computer by using a bloated OS. Yep, my favorite OS.

What tweaks do you do?

I am using it on my old PC because it runs more stable than any other OS (except Ubuntu  )
On the main computer I am running Windows XP and my personal PC has Windows 7 Professional installed on it.

I'm running Windows 2000 Server as my desktop since year 2002.

It's great, powerful, stable and fast. I run the server version so I cand RDP to localhost as Administrator to do system administration. Because I always run as a "standard user" so I don't get virus, etc.

I run antivirus free, AND virus free.

This system was installed in 2002, and has never been reformated. I use it everyday for all tasks. I rarely power it off.

However, I don't play games in this machine; I don't have much time for that.

Code: Select all
Microsoft Windows 2000 [Versión 5.00.2195]
(C) Copyright 1985-2000 Microsoft Corp.

C:\Documents and Settings\<MEHERE>\Mis documentos>dir c:\WINNT\setuplog.txt
El volumen de la unidad C es SISTEMA_NTFS
El número de serie del volumen es: D498-AAF5

 Directorio de c:\WINNT

04-12-2002  04:52              233.790 setuplog.txt
               1 archivos        233.790 bytes
               0 dirs     914.538.496 bytes libres
C:\Documents and Settings\<MEHERE>\Mis documentos>uptime
\\<MIHOSTNAME> has been up for: 35 day(s), 3 hour(s), 31 minute(s), 15 second(s)

Estimate based on last boot record in the event log.
See UPTIME /help for more detail.

My dream: to get IE8 to run on W2K. I don't think it will be possible, however. Luckily we have Firefox 3.x.

I use both RealVNC and TeamViewer for all my remote desktop work and both are working fine on Win2K.

VNC et al. work OK, but with them you can only connect to the local console and the system remains single-user. With Terminal Services, you can connect and login as concurrent different users with different credentials all at the same time in the same machine. It's another ballgame.

I also use VNC server to gain remote access to my w2k console, but I need to login as a concurrent different user to do administration tasks, and terminal services is needed for that.

I'm running Windows 2000 Professional on my Dell Inspiron 600m laptop. It's running perfecty great, even better than Windows XP Home Edition which is its default operating system and I use it for my business.
