Sim City Societies Demo (fixing dropped)

PostPosted by OldBoy2k » Tue Nov 17, 2009 10:24 am

This fix covers Sim City Societies Demo.

Missing Export:
Kernel32.dll - GetSystemWow64DirectoryW (EA Setup)
Kernel32.dll - InitializeSListHead,InterlockedPopEntrySList,InterlockedPushEntrySList

Fix:
1) download and extract the demo
2) to EA Setup to run you need the Kernel32.dll from the wrapper pack:
click here to download Wrapper pack
and add copy together with the renamed Win2k system Kernel32_ORG.dll to the setup directory.
3) choose custom install and change and rename in the install directory
Code: Select all
SimCityâ„¢ Societies Demo
to
Code: Select all
SimCity Societies Demo
or respectively for the retail
Code: Select all
SimCity Societies

and install the game.
4)

...under progress because of a not yet solved Visual C++ runtime error...

Important Fix Update:
I decided to drop fixing this demo because the retail version patched to 1.0.4.243 crashed without this error and showed much more stable loading behaviour!

"Microsoft Visal C +++ Runtime Library

Program:...\Electronic Arts\Sim City Societies\Sim City Societies.exe

This application has requested the runtime to terminate in an unusual way. Please contact the application's support team for more information."

http://forums.electronicarts.co.uk/simc ... aunch.html

Already renamed the install directory but no change and also this KB Fix disappeared
http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index ... 326AAvmXyQ :(

Msvcrt.dll has v6.1.9844.0 so from the above microsoft info it should work with the Win2k msvcrt.dll but it doesn't and Microsoft Net 3.0 is XP and that can't be the only solution to get this screwed game up and running

Imstalling Frame Net 2.0 SP1 (full) right now.

Yeah, thy w00t, thats the one  Will extract it and look and play a bit with the files.
Edit:
Dumb, thats not possible.

Also checked hundreds of post about the runtime error in the simcity database http://simcitysocieties.ea.com/communit ... startRow=1
but no wink of a working solution.

Alright,thanks :).

Here's the latest news.I noticed that vcredist_x86.exe (Visual C++ 2005 libs) which comes with the demo dates v2.0.50727.762 where as on M$ homepage its vcredist_x86.exe v2.0.50727.42.Dunno if it has to do with the problem.Removed the dotnetfx.exe,vcredist_x86.exe and directx which comes with the demo and only installed the game on a C++ runtime SP1 patched Win2k but the runtime error still pops up :x

Okay,lets start from the basics...
- uninstalled all Visual C++ libs as there are 2005,2005SP1,2008 and 2008SP1

Now when starting the game,it requests for vcomp.dll.There are two versions of vcomp.dll out there:
Microsoft® C/C++ OpenMP Runtime DLL
Microsoft® Visual Studio® 2005
both dates: v8.0.50727.42

This one works:
Size: 64,0 KB (65.536 Bytes)

This one doesn't (error:its not a valid Windows lib):
Size: 80,0 KB (81.920 Bytes)

Before uninstalling the C++ libs, the game loads MSVCP80.dll and MSVCR80.dll both dated:
v8.0.50727.4053
Microsoft® C++ Runtime Library
Microsoft® Visual Studio® 2005
MSVCP80.dll Size: 541 KB (554.832 Bytes)
MSVCR80.dll Size: 617 KB (632.656 Bytes)

and MSVCM80.DLL Size: 468 KB (479.232 Bytes) v8.0.50727.42

Now after new 2005 C++ redist. the files have been installed:
msvcm80.dll v8.0.50727.42 Size: 468 KB (479.232 Bytes)
msvcp80.dll v8.0.50727.42 Size: 536 KB (548.864 Bytes)
msvcr80.dll v8.0.50727.42 Size: 612 KB (626.688 Bytes)

The visual 2005 C++ package that comes with the demo installs all three dlls with the same size but labled as v8.00.50727.762

The visual 2005 C++ SP1 (2009) update package installs all three dlls with the following sizes:
msvcm80.dll v8.0.50727.4053 Size: 468 KB (479.232 Bytes)
msvcp80.dll v8.0.50727.4053 Size: 541 KB (554.832 Bytes)
msvcr80.dll v8.0.50727.4053 Size: 617 KB (632.656 Bytes)

but game still doesn't load up.

Update 2: Re-downloading and trying this demo version again: http://www.gamershell.com/download_27520.shtml

hmm there's a new demo on the sim city website SCSDemo_WW.exe Size: 791MB (829.659.346 Bytes) also will download that version, too.

Update: doesn't work :(

The Msvcirt.dll in the KB runtime hotfix http://support.microsoft.com/kb/884538/en-us
dates: 7.0.2600.2534 57,344 Msvcirt.dll and it seems this and not msvcrt.dll are responsible for these crashes.

7.0.2600.5512 (later one)

one i'm testing right now:
http://www.dlldump.com/download-dll-fil ... nload.html

On Win2k SP4 MSVCIRT.DLL v6.10.8637.0 is installed,maybe there's some hotfix which installs a newer version...

No crash change when replacing the system MSVCIRT.DLL by the XP newer version *g*.

Getting Closer.Lucky there was a chance to create a DebugDiag Crash and Memory Leak of the error.

Throws out: Error-Code 0xe06d7363

Thats what M$ says about it:

Depends. From the KB info it seems to be a API problem which could be related the wrapper. This morning i was quite convinced its a demo problem, now it seems to be a general API problem. Will remove the retail fix for now until we get the demo working...

Did you tried it yet on virtual VMW, DosFreak?
