The current Steam Beta Update is giving me this error:
Image
Steam - Fatal Error
Fatal Error: Could not load module 'bin/vgui2.dll'

The current Steam Beta Update thread is here:
Steam Client Beta Available

To test this for yourself:
  • Download Steam from here: Install Steam Now
  • After downloading and installing Steam, set up a free Steam account.
  • Add some free games to your account, see these posts for details:
    viewtopic.php?p=1913#p1913
    viewtopic.php?p=1976#p1976
  • Right click on the Steam icon in the taskbar and click "Settings".
    OR
    Left click on the "Steam" menu" and then click on "Settings".
  • In the "ACCOUNT" tab under "Beta participation:" click the "CHANGE..." button.
  • Click on the drop down box, click on "Beta Update" and then click OK.
  • Click "RESTART STEAM".
  • Wait for Steam to update and then you will get the "Fatal Error: Could not load module 'bin/vgui2.dll'" error.
  • Register a free Steam Users' Forum account here:
    http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/register.php
  • Post in this thread:
    Steam Client Beta Available

NB: You can also use a registry edit to manually subscribe yourself to the Steam Beta Update. Either download this registry patch here:
SteamClientBetaUpdate.reg
OR
create a file called SteamClientBetaUpdate.reg and paste in this:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Valve\Steam\Beta]
"name"="Beta Update"
"client"="client_candidate"
"bootstrapper"="client_candidate"
"7"="client_candidate"

Right click on SteamClientBetaUpdate.reg and then click on Merge. Double click on Steam.exe, if it still isn't updating to the Beta Update you may need to delete ClientRegistry.blob and then run Steam.exe to force Steam to update.

To unsubscribe yourself from the Steam Beta Update:
  • Click the Windows Start button.
  • Click on "Run...".
  • Paste this into the "Open:" textbox:
    "C:\Program Files\Steam\Steam.exe" -clearbeta
  • Click the "OK" button.
  • Wait for Steam to update.

"Support for steam on Windows 2000 will end on August 31st 2010."

...I will discuss this returning error with OldCigarette the next days but until then report bugs in the STEAM support forum.

I was able to subscribe to the 7/23/2010 Beta successfully and this Beta ran without errors.

I was able to subscribe to the 7/23/2010 Beta successfully however this Beta gave me errors as I posted about in this thread.

7/30/2010
I was locked out from subscribing to this Beta, even time I tried to subscribe, it would revert me back to the normal client.

I'm not sure which Beta update it was, but I can now once again subscribe to the Steam client Betas and this current Beta is running under Win2K successfully without any errors and without any wrappers.

The previous Beta went public and a new Beta has been released.

The thread for it is here:
http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/s ... ?t=1429473

The Beta is working on Win2K without any wrappers. When Steam starts with windows or when you do a Steam restart it won't display this message:

^^ That message is only displayed when you quit Steam and then start Steam.

Steam have got another Beta going, in fact its been going for over 1 month:
http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/s ... ?t=1591762

More importantly they have re-enabled the Hardware survey for Windows 2000 users:
http://store.steampowered.com/hwsurvey/

Log into your steam account now and please fill out the survey.

If you cannot access the survey then please subscribe to the Beta and then after it finishes updating, quit and start Steam.

One of the recent Steam updates have broken some functionality within the Community browser. Now I cannot view any Community profiles at all.

Its working fine on WinXP, not on Win2K, any idea why?

In the Steam Browser, only the Library page is working.

The Store, News, and Community pages are not working anymore.

Any idea why? Could it be flash related?

Editing the header using PE Tools as per the thread here:

The procedure entry point RtlCaptureContext could not be located in the dynamic link library KERNEL32.dll.

After pressing OK twice Steam continued to update :S

Can someone please check the latest version of Steam to see if it runs with either wrapper?

A couple of months ago I signed up for Steam for the first time and I did try to install the client without success on run, but success on install.

There were 2 problems:
- vc++ 10 requirements (or something else) so you need to fcwin (BlackWingCat Wrapper utility) a lot of times to installer as it changes along the updating process as happens several separate install (I don't get why Steam installs this way instead install all the updated at once).

- after all the install, it didn't work because as you have to fcwin the loader, it checks for a checksum integrity and as it has changed by fcwin, starts "a loop" of not being able to run if it doesn't match. Then, it re-downloads again the loader and the "original version" doesn't load.

There was a file with the checksum, but change it also calls for a check against the server and looping again.

I can't remember exact errors, but if I don't leave anything else, that was all.

I didn't try again. I planed to install it on an XP virtual machine to be able to install games and then run the games from Windows 2000 with a nocd/nosteam crack. I think it's the best option, but I haven't tested yet. I have less and less time for tests nowadays.
