System-Files problems with fixes for MS applications!!

PostPosted by adun » Sun May 30, 2010 8:09 pm

The problem with newer Microsoft-Programs and windows 2000
Most every microsoft application like office or internet explorer was designed for a specific AIP of one windows version.
To keep up the compatibility with the older windows versiosn the missing AIPs were installed along with the app. Thats why the IE6 is like a littel SP for windows 2000 because he updates some 2k system files. (And that's the reason why it's important to update IE and WMP to the latest version)

Normal Examples provided by MS
Office XP on windows 98 (the updated system files have a own uninstall point in the program/function section) /windows NT 4.0
Office 2003 on windows 2000
Office 2007 on Windows XP
IE6 on windows 2000/windows ME/windows 98/windows NT 4.0
IE7/IE8 on windows XP
etc:

Example
So for example if you want to fix office 07 on win2k by using the MSI installer theres one big problem. By removing the lounch condition the installer thinks that you were running a windows XP system. And office 07 updates the system files on win2k like on a XP machine.
Now evry application using a updated systemfile (like msvcrt, etc) will think that this is a windows XP system and will try to get the XP AIPs in every other dependecies. That will show up some error when using every other programm that should run on win2k. If you click OK the app will start but this error is annoying!!
Thats why the Office 07 runs without any error using alitiris SVS but give some strange errors during the startup when you install it using the MSI files.

Fix
The only way to avoid such errors, is to us use Altiris SVS (but the ASVS must runn all the time) or you creat a install-log file using WinInstall LE 2003 and replace all the updates systemfiles with the old ones.
In some cases the installer ad new files that normaly don't excist in this windows version. In that case you only have to delet them
If the install log doesn't help you must use dependency walker !
But the app you are trying to fix need those other files, so copy them to the specific install folder. (cut them from system32 directory)

I will describe in each MS app fix which files were unintentional updated.

I still use Office 97.... turns out microsoft released a compatibility pack to allow 97 to open DOCX (etc) files. after applying the two updates to 97, i install OCONVPCK.exe (1721kb) and FILEFORMATCONVERTERS (37,900kB)

=========================
Users of the Microsoft Office XP and 2003 programs Word, Excel, or PowerPoint—please install all High-Priority updates from Microsoft Update before downloading the Compatibility Pack.

By installing the Compatibility Pack in addition to Microsoft Office 2000, Office XP, or Office 2003, you will be able to open, edit, and save files using the file formats in newer versions of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint . The Compatibility Pack can also be used in conjunction with the Microsoft Office Word Viewer 2003, Excel Viewer 2003, and PowerPoint Viewer 2003 to view files saved in these new formats. For more information about the Compatibility Pack, see 924074.

(and yes it seems to work with office 97)
