Hiya,

please first try to replace the c:\program files\steam\steamapps\common\sonic adventure dx\XINPUT9_1_0.DLL lib with the one from the X3Daudio soundriver package. If it gets updated next time when you start STEAM and the game, copy the Advapi32.dll wrapper to it.

In this directory:
C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\sonic adventure dx
I renamed this file:
xinput9_1_0.dll
to:
xinput9_1_0.dll.original

From this url:
http://m0003.gamecopyworld.com/games/gc ... _Utilities
I downloaded:
Win2k X3D+XAudio2 Drivers (DX9cAPR11)

After extracting the rar file, from this directory:
C:\Win2k X3D+XAudio2 (DX9cAPR11)\copy_to_bin\
I copied this file:
xinput9_1_0.dll
to this directory:
C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\sonic adventure dx

And now config.exe runs.

However it does not appear to save the settings. When I press the SAVE button and then relaunch it, it does not show my previous selections (1024x768 instead of 1280x720 default, and Full Screen instead of the default Window) instead it shows the defaults. So is it really saving my changes and then showing the defaults again next launch or is it not saving my changes at all?

DW session file:
config_exe20120116.dwi (609.08KB)

Profiled:
config_exe20120116_profiled.dwi (1.03MB)
^ In the profiled version I clicked 1024x768, then clicked Full Screen, and then clicked SAVE button.

I can confirm that it is not saving my changes. After selecting 1024x768 and Full Screen and then clicking SAVE I run Sonic Adventure DX.exe and it is running in a Window mode and wrong screen res.

Furthermore when I run Sonic Adventure DX.exe I can hear sounds and music but I don't have any picture. Instead it is just a black screen.

DW:
Sonic Adventure DX_exe20120116.dwi (613.66KB)

Profiled:
Sonic Adventure DX_exe20120116_profiled.dwi (1.08MB)
^ For the profiled version I waited until the music started and then I clicked the x button on the top right hand corner of the window to close the game.

Any idea on how to fix the lack of pictures?

ATI graphic card? STEAM Forum: Sonic Adventure DX Black Screen

Try User32.dll Wrapper and especially try the following things:
a) run DxDiag -> More Help -> DirectDraw Override -> set a fixed Override value for CRT/TFT of 60Hz
b) in case xvid.dll codec can be found in your system32 root directoy, register it in regsvr32:
cd %windir%\system32
regsvr32 xvid.ax
regsvr32 xvid.dll
c) install Windows Media Player 9(WMP) codecs

Tried the following in the following order:
* Going to:
Control Panel -> Display -> Settings -> Advanced... -> Monitor
and changing the "Refresh Frequency" to 60 Hertz and then pressing OK, OK, Yes, OK. Still a black screen.

* Downloaded and installed the Xvid codec from here:
http://www.xvid.org/Downloads.15.0.html

During the install I saw this error message:
Image

Doing a search for xvid in C:\WINNT now finds 3 files in C:\WINNT\system32:
xvid.ax
xvidcore.dll
xvidvfw.dll
While I still have a black screen, I noticed the default size and default location of the window has changed.
Rebooted, still a black screen, size and location of window has returned to pre-xvid installation.

Ran the following 3 commands:
regsvr32 C:\WINNT\system32\xvid.ax
^ DllRegisterServer in C:\WINNT\system32\xvid.ax succeeded.
regsvr32 C:\WINNT\system32\xvidcore.dll
^ Got this error message:
Image
regsvr32 C:\WINNT\system32\xvidvfw.dll
^ Got this error message:
Image

Fired up Dependency Walker and opened up:
C:\WINNT\system32\REGSVR32.EXE
and used:
C:\WINNT\system32\xvidcore.dll
in the "Program arguments:" text box. After running and saving did the same with C:\WINNT\system32\xvidvfw.dll.

Dependency Walker profiled files:
REGSVR32_exe_xvidcore_dll20120117.dwi (307.81KB)
REGSVR32_exe_xvidvfw_dll20120117.dwi (646.36KB)
^^ Will PView help here and how to use it?

Still a black screen, I noticed the default size and default location of the window has changed again.

* Downloaded the Codec Installation Package(WM9Codecs.exe) from here:
http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=507

During the installation I got this error message:

DW files:
WM9Codecs_exe20120117.dwi (199.48KB)
WM9Codecs_exe20120117_profiled.dwi (360.14KB)

LOL. I had tried to install the WMP9 Codecs for WinXP.

* Downloaded Codec Installation Package(WM9Codecs9x.exe) for Windows 2000 from here:
http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=6220
which installed successfully.

Still a black screen.

Rebooted and still a black screen. I notice that after the reboot the size and position of the window changes back to its default. I also have the DivX codecs installed and I suspect that they are set back to the default when I reboot. When I register the xvid codec, the size and position of the window changes.

What about the error that I get when I try to register both xvidcore.dll & xvidvfw.dll?

Hi,

please post another profiled DW log of both executables. Thanks!

Edit:
found a save game fix for STEAM:
1st create a folder named "SEGA" in your documents folder, then create a folder named "SONIC ADVENTURE DX" in the just created SEGA folder. After that, copy the file config.ini that is located in "programs\steam\steamapps\common\sonic adventure dx" into the "documents\SEGA\SONIC ADVENTURE DX" folder.
By doing this you'll be able to save. Also you can now change the settings of the game by manually editing the config.ini file with a text editing software (wordpad, notepad, notepad++, ...), for example, by changing the line FULL_SCREEN=0 to FULL_SCREEN=1 you'll have the game in fullscreen, or by changing the line RESOLUTION=4 to RESOLUTION=3 the game will be in 1024x768 instead of 1280x720.

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa242736(v=vs.60).aspx
Overview: PView
Visual Studio 6.0

With the PView process viewer (PVIEW.EXE), you can examine and modify many characteristics of the processes and threads running on your system. PView can help you answer questions such as these:
  • How much memory does the program allocate at various points in its execution, and how much memory is being paged out?
  • Which processes and threads are using the most CPU time?
  • How does the program run at different system priorities?
  • What happens if a thread or process stops responding to Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE), or pipe input/output (I/O)?
  • What percentage of time is spent running application program interface (API) calls?

! Warning: With PView, you can modify the status of processes running on your system. As a result, by using PView, you can stop processes and potentially halt the entire system. Make sure you save edited files before running PView.

Will PView help troubleshoot registering the dlls problem?
